Entertaining Guests

We had guests visiting from Atlanta and Germany this weekend. They all flew in for a long weekend of sightseeing and seafood eating.

The temperatures were pretty cool but we made the most of what sun we had. We managed to see some coastline and lighthouses, with a little shopping thrown in for good measure at the outlets in Freeport. We laughed, drank, and took tons of photos.

We made our new friends from Germany, Alex and Sabine, and Joel from Atlanta promise to come back in the summer when the temperatures are warmer and they can enjoy more Maine has to offer.

A Nice, Local Treat

A nice perk of living on the coast of Maine is being able to have lobster whenever we like.

Now, before you turn green with envy, let me assure you that we don’t take advantage of our proximity to the ocean and it’s lovely treats as often as you might think. In fact, we rarely eat lobster. This was only the second time of year we’ve had some and the last time was in April when we took some to our host in Atlanta. Sometimes we go years without having any.

One of the reasons why we don’t eat much lobster is that I’m a red meat fan. Most times I’d like to have a good steak over a crawling crustacean any day. However, after listening to my husband mention a couple times over the past few weeks that we should think about having some lobster, I agreed and jumped at a good deal.

I came about this through a coworker who knows a lobster fisherman. With the economy the way it is, they are struggling a bit so they are approaching things a little differently to get their product out. Not only did we get a decent deal, but they delivered them to our office Friday afternoon.

This time of year the lobsters are soft shelled. Some people prefer hard shelled but I think I prefer soft shelled. They are just so much easier to break and pick.

Often times I have lobster then after say, “Eh, it was okay, but not outstanding.” Tonight was a bit different. The lobster was delightful. We both really enjoyed it. A coworker told me today that when the lobsters are pulled from the sea and cooked the same day they taste better than any other time. I think he was right about these.

It will still be a long time before we have lobster again. Until then I’ll enjoy my red meat.
